My dear Swan – Ways and Motifs to Wagner 2006 review

In Haus Wahnfried , the painter and stage artist Henning von Gierke presented an exhibition entitled “Mein lieber Schwan – Wege und Motive zu Wagner” (“My Dear Swan – Ways and Motifs to Wagner”), illustrating in four rooms his attempts to come to grips with the works of Richard Wagner.

In drawings, sketches, models and film documents, Henning von Gierke demonstrates the path from the idea to its realisation on stage. The intention was to give the visitor an opportunity to immerse himself in the world of the artist, as though visiting a studio.

The artist describes himself “as an archaeologist excavating Wagner’s motifs”, and he designs the room like an excavation site. For each of the operas he has worked on – he has deigned and/or produced “Lohengrin” (Bayreuth Festival), “Der Fliegende Holländer” (Munich), the “Ring” and “Parsifal” (both in Tokyo) –, there is a separate “excavation chest”, in which the motifs of Wagner’s works are lifted out of their historical and literary environments and brought to the light of day.
