Dear Reader,
Thank you for your interest in the Society of Friends of Bayreuth, the society of patrons of the Bayreuth Festival.
As long ago as 1948, only three years after the end of the Second World War, a group came together, public figures who wanted to create a financial basis on which the Bayreuth Festival could be revived.
In September 1949, the Society of Friends of Bayreuth was founded, whose donations provided the vital assistance needed to enable the Bayreuth Festival to be re-opened under the direction of Richard Wagner’s grandsons, the brothers Wieland and Wolfgang Wagner.
And so 1951 saw the beginning of “New Bayreuth”, where not only the musical standards, but also the bold language of Wieland Wagner’s staging met with world-wide acclaim. The rebirth of the Festival was a resounding success, something that could not have been taken for granted by any means in view of the recent past. The world-wide discussion about the role of Bayreuth began.
From the first beginnings in 1949 until the present day, our membership has risen constantly. As a result, we now have 5,158 members (as of 31.12.2007), making us one of the biggest societies of patrons in Germany - and one of the financially strongest.
Since it is our aim to continue providing the Bayreuth Festival with lasting support in future, we are always delighted to welcome new friends in our international circle of sponsors and friends of the Bayreuth Festival.
